of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?

In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties
look set to come together to support.

The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend
in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race,
and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.

The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations,
thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations
in the first place.

So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while
using their cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be
limited.

The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations
need to be made.

At present we have the absurd situation in which donations
get made – but you only find out the details of who has given what to
whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.

In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency
and far less big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.

Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’

Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as
opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.

And how much they can donate will be capped.

Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new
laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’. 

They have lost their collective minds after finding
out that Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.

I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.

Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping out the influence of the
wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer
to accountability.

More fool me.

The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor
and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.

It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest
too much on this issue.

Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors
such as Clive Palmer

The Greens have taken massive donations in the past,
contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations

The major parties have long complained about the influence
the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals. 

And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past, contrary to their
irregular calls to tighten donations rules.

Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a mile from reforms that will curtail dark
art of political donations.

The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to
take effect immediately, by the way. It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.

They are aiming for implementation by 2026,
giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them.

Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the
Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth
comb.

As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include
hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking
advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.

But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented, the
crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated
for.

They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.

To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about
being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

Gaga released the album’s lead single Disease last month to rave reviews

The Greens leader has been outed as a member of the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge, an invitation-only set of catered waiting areas
and services handed out by the airline in what has been called ‘Australia’s most exclusive club’.

Mr Bandt was challenged on Monday by ABC Radio National stand-in host Steve Cannane that he was ‘enjoying free hospitality from a company that has illegally sacked hundreds of workers’.

Mr Bandt replied: ‘And I’ll declare that and people
can make their own judgement about what they think about that.’

Cannane was referring to the Federal Court’s ruling that Qantas illegally sacked 1,700 workers at the start of
the Covid pandemic in a case brought by Transport
Workers Union. 

Commenting on the sacking in June of 2020, Mr Bandt called
it a ‘devastating day for thousands of Qantas workers & their families’ in a Facebook post.
‘We’re thinking of you,’ he wrote.

Cannane challenged Mr Bandt further saying: ‘You don’t think you should be
a little purer on this and just not take their
(Qantas’s) hospitality?’

Mr Bandt said he always made declarations about matters such as
this and argued that the party’s policies to tax big corporations heavily
show the perks were not impacting the Greens.

is alleged to have received from Qantas in new book The
Chairman’s Lounge authored by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston.

The Greens are licking their electoral wounds after the Queensland state poll, where they are battling to hold onto their two seats after stating they
aimed to triple their representation in parliament.

With 72 per cent of the vote counted they appear to have retained the Brisbane seat of Maiwar but suffered a
4.6 per cent swing to the ALP.

However, they remain behind South Brisbane, which has seen a massive 12.4 per cent
swing to Labor with 64 per cent of votes counted.

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and reproductive rights

As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire, each major candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite theme — abortion rights
for Democrat Kamala Harris and border security for Republican Donald
Trump.

In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak,
with both topics the subject of fiercely debated ballot referendums.

And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump lost to President Joe Biden in 2020 by a
tiny margin of about 10,500 votes — every ballot truly will count.

In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange T-shirts were
going door-to-door to try to persuade voters to back a ballot
measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state constitution — and, while they’re at it,
to vote for Vice President Harris.

To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed by several
Republican-controlled states amount to “a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.”

She added, “Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.”

Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights,
Ireland, a registered nurse, has worked in several states where abortion is banned or severely limited.

Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences
for women having problem pregnancies or carrying nonviable fetuses when doctors refuse to treat them.

“Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need,” she told AFP.

– ‘Abortion is murder’ –

As Ireland carries her message to potential voters, she noted, particularly to young people who may be less likely to vote, that it was Donald Trump who appointed the three justices
who tipped the Supreme Court against abortion rights.

“It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,” Ireland said.

But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.

“I do think that abortion is murder,” said Pedro Lopez, a 20-year-old college student.

“There are cases of incest or rape” that merit
exceptions, he conceded, “but that’s very small.”

He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have entered the country from
Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.

“People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he said.

“My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”

So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let local law enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute anyone suspected of
having entered the country illegally — powers normally reserved
to the border police who work for the federal government.

“I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez said.

– Mixed impact –

The major political parties see the competing referendums
as offering an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote —
on ballot questions at the very heart of the two presidential campaigns.

But the referendums may not have the clear
impact on the race for the White House that activists hope.

Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the
Republican holding a very narrow lead.

Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support
and both appear likely to pass.

So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at
Arizona State University.

Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump
back to the White House, Brian said.

Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs.
Republican issue, the Republican Party includes “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also raises
conservatives’ concerns about “government interference,” she added.

The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not
just among Trump Republicans but also “moderates and even many Democrats,” said John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona state senator.

The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening on migration, specifically her promise to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent months.

The vice president, Kavanagh said, is “running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.”

Venice, a city long associated with masks and masquerades, was the perfect place to unveil Joker five years
ago; and last month, at the venerable film festival there, it was followed by the sequel, Joker: Folie À Deux.

The director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix once more in the
title role, this time joined by Lady Gaga as what I suppose
we must call the love interest, although that would undervalue
her wonderful performance.

We’ve known since A Star Is Born in 2018 that she can act, but
she really is terrific in a bad-girl role. They’d have loved her at
St Trinian’s.

This film is audaciously different in style from the original, not as electrifying, but bold and brilliant all the same.

Arthur is now behind bars, waiting to see whether he will be judged
sane enough to stand trial for murder, and in the meantime
enjoying his celebrity status with fellow prisoners and even the warders, one of whom, a sadistic
Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.

Either way, identity confusion is the theme of
this film, which keeps being billed as a musical. 

It’s not, really, although music looms large as an expression of Arthur
and Lee’s burgeoning love for one another. And there
are a couple of swooning dance routines that make them look like psychotic versions of
Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in La La Land (2016).

Moreover, it is while watching Vincente Minnelli’s 1953 classic The Band Wagon that Lee, who claims to have been imprisoned for arson, sets fire to their prison wing.

The ensuing chaos provides an excellent opportunity to
escape, yet Phillips and his co-writer Scott Silver skilfully toy with our expectations throughout; each time we anticipate which way the narrative is going to go,
it confounds us by wheeling off in another direction.

is time for the trial, with all of Gotham gripped by the subject of multiple personality disorder.
Is the defendant accused of five murders Arthur, or is it Joker?
His kindly lawyer (Catherine Keener) strives to show it is the former;
Lee just as urgently wants him to identify as his demonic alter ego.

For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this sequel doesn’t scale those
heady heights, it is still a gripping film about
mental illness; not quite comparable with all-time greats such
as Psycho (1960) and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), but not
too far off.

– Joker’s Gotham, of course, is a lightly fictionalised version of New York City.
The real thing is the backdrop to A Different Man, another absorbing story, splendidly written and directed by Aaron Schimberg, about an urban loner struggling with life.

In the case of the troubled, self-conscious Edward (Sebastian Stan), an aspiring actor, that’s apparently because
he has a disfiguring craniofacial condition. Instructional
corporate videos seem to be about as far as he can get in the
acting world.

There are obvious echoes of The Elephant Man (1980),
and for that matter of recent release The Substance, in which Demi Moore’s character, a former movie star ‘disfigured’ by a few wrinkles, finds a
way of transforming into her own younger self.

Here, Edward is told by a doctor that ‘an alternative path has
presented itself’. In other words, medical science has
found a way to reverse his condition, turning him into a perfectly attractive middle-aged man.

But Schimberg’s point, made with great satirical swagger, is that Edward, despite his radical change in appearance, is still the same
person underneath that he always was.

In his former condition he was befriended by his pretty, charismatic neighbour, Ingrid (Renate
Reinsve), a playwright. Now he is able to fall into bed
with her, and to star in a play she has written about
their relationship, little though she knows of his real identity.

I was even reminded of Tootsie (1982) and Mrs
Doubtfire (1993) as Edward’s new persona fundamentally fails to alter who he actually is.
This is illuminated by the arrival of Oswald, an Englishman with the same condition Edward once had,
but popular, witty, confident, and gloriously played by Adam Pearson (who really does suffer from
a disfiguring condition called neurofibromatosis).

Pearson is probably best-known for his debut film, Jonathan Glazer’s brilliant
Under The Skin (2013). Which is apt, because this picture,
too, is about what’s under the skin.

Paul Weller’s film debut? That’s entertainment!
The 68th London Film Festival opens next week with the world premiere of Blitz, director Steve
McQueen’s drama set in London as the Luftwaffe’s bombs rain down night after night.

Saoirse Ronan, for my money one of the most talented actresses of her generation, plays Rita, an East End mum whose
son George (Elliott Heffernan) goes missing. It sounds intriguing even without the casting of The Jam’s former front
man Paul Weller — in his feature film debut — as Rita’s father.

I’m also very much looking forward to another world premiere, Joy, the story of the three brilliant British medical
pioneers whose work on IVF led to the world’s first ‘test-tube’ baby, Louise Brown, in 1978.

It is directed by Ben Taylor, best-known for his TV work on shows such as Sex Education and Catastrophe,
and stars Bill Nighy, James Norton and Thomasin McKenzie.

Robert Harris’s novel starring Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci.
A couple of new documentaries catch the eye, too. One of them is made by actress Sadie Frost,
whose directing debut was a film about Mary Quant.
This time she turns to another fashion icon of the 1960s, with a feature
called Twiggy.

And Elton John: Never Too Late promises a ‘uniquely intimate’ look at the star’s life and
career. It’s been made by his long-time partner David Furnish, so…
we’ll see.

Anthony Albanese has tried to claim his relationship with Alan Joyce was
a strictly professional one between a Prime Minister
and a corporate titan, as he battles claims the Qantas boss
was his ‘personal travel agent’ for free flights and upgrades.

However that characterization of the relationship was
at odds with that made by Mr Joyce, who said he was ‘good mates’ with
Mr Albanese and had been ‘for years’.

In the wake of the explosive claims that the Prime Minister had Mr Joyce arrange free tickets and upgrades, Mr Albanese
distanced himself from the Qantas chief.

When asked about about their relationship
on Sunday Mr Albanese implied it was purely in a professional capacity, having been Transport Minister and shadow transport spokesperson before becoming Prime
Minister. 

‘He (Joyce) was the CEO of the national airline
… I had the same relationship with him that
I have with John Borghetti as the CEO of Virgin,’ Mr Albanese said.

That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing Mr
Albanese and Mr Joyce apparently greatly enjoying each other’s company. 

Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high spirits on the red carpet at the Qantas 100th Gala Dinner in March last year.

In photos from the event, Mr Joyce proudly walks the red carpet with one arm
around the prime minister and the other around Mr Albanese’s partner,
Jodie Haydon.

Just five months later, in August, a smiling Mr Albanese attended Qantas’s unveiling of
it’s special ‘Yes 23′ emblazoned airplanes for the Voice
referendum.

Mr Joyce was seen touching Mr Albanese’s arm, with the
PM bursting into laughter.

Even when Scott Morrison was PM,  Mr Joyce enjoyed an apparently close relationship with Mr Albanese as the pair stood close together at the launch of
the Qantas’ landmark Perth to London flight in March, 2018. 

During a Senate hearing in September 2023, Mr Joyce said he had been ‘friends for
years’ with Mr Albanese.

Asked about why he gifted Mr Albanese’s son Nathan a membership
to the prestigious and exclusive Chairman’s Lounge Mr Joyce
refused to confirm or deny but talked up his relationship with the Prime Minister.

‘I’ve been good mates with Albo for some time,
‘ Mr Joyce said. 

However, the then Qantas CEO refused to say whether he lobbied
the Prime Minister on the controversial decision to lock competitor Qatar Airways out of domestic
routes.

It has since emerged in a new book about Qantas, The Chairman’s Lounge, by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston that Ms Haydon is also a Chairman’s Lounge member.

Anthony Albanese fires up and launches a brutal personal attack on book author

Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese received 22 upgrades
from economy from Qantas and he would liaise personally with the former airline boss for them. 

Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his
various parliamentary jobs to ask for special upgrades for himself or his
family.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22
flights Mr Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’
and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu,
with some being for holidays.

Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights was for work purposes and all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.    

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt on the accusations describing
Mr Albanese as being the ‘best friend’ of Mr Joyce. 

Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese had directly contacted Mr Joyce to request upgrades while holding
a regulatory position in the transport sector.

‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking up the phone to one of the
most important stakeholders in the portfolio asking for a
free upgrade, then again, I think the Prime Minister would be
able to answer those questions more effectively than anyone else because I’m not aware of anyone else having done it,’ Mr Dutton said.

It has since emerged that Ms Haydon also has membership of the Qantas Chairman’s
Lounge

The Prime Minister denied frequently asking Mr Joyce for upgrades on Tuesday at press conference in the NSW city
of Newcastle.

‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce
certainly were not discussed through calls – we discussed the first flight from
Australia to Dubai on the A380,’ he said.

‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all of
the rules.’

Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer
Sarah Ferguson about how confident he was that Mr Albanese had made calls personally to Mr
Joyce for upgrades.

‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.

Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr Joyce’s
lobbying to block UAE airline Qatar domestically Aston said it was ‘implausible’ to think
that the Prime Minister’s office had nothing to do with the decision.

‘It’s very hard to imagine a decision of any political sensitivity in the Albanese government that would not go
through the Prime Minister’s office,’ Aston replied.

He noted the opening up of the Australian domestic market Qatar
had seemingly been sailing through with Transport Minister Catherine King speaking
warmly about the proposal until ‘everything changed’ to stop it dead in tracks. 

 Ms King repeatedly denied in parliament the decision to block Qatar was due
to Qantas lobbying her or any Labor colleagues.

Despite Mr Albanese claiming he declared
every upgrade received from Qantas the Australian Financial Review reported on Tuesday that
he failed to do for his former wife Carmel Tebbutt when the two traveled
together.

while in his various parliamentary jobs

Sky New host Sharri Markson on Monday night labeled Mr Joyce as ‘basically
Albanese’s personal travel agent.’

power of the Transport Workers Union by sacking 1700 staff during
Covid. 

The sacking has since been ruled illegal by Federal
Court in a case brought by the union with Qantas facing
possible hundreds of thousands in compensation payouts. 

The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender in semi-retired 3AW radio star
Neil Mitchell. 

‘Quick test: upgrade Albo is a bad look,’ Mitchell wrote
on X.

‘But does anybody believe he was seriously compromised by having Alan Joyce as
a bestie? Time to rewrite rules governing politicians.’

July 23 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International pushed
the test-launch of its heated tobacco device, IQOS, in the U.S.
to the fourth quarter on Tuesday and lowered its annual forecast for the heated
tobacco business.

The pilot was earlier scheduled to run in Austin, Texas,
in the second quarter, for which the company reported results on the day.

The company declined to comment on why the launch had been delayed.

Philip Morris has invested billions to promote and expand its
portfolio of alternatives to traditional combustible cigarettes amid
stricter regulations and falling smoking rates in some markets.

The launch of its flagship heated tobacco device in the United States is also facing
resistance from health campaigners, who have written to regulators in the country accusing the company of misrepresenting past regulatory decisions, Reuters reported last week.

The company also awaits market authorization from
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its IQOS ILUMA device, which it expects
by the second half of 2025.

A ban on flavored heated tobacco in the European Union has already hit shipments this year,
with Philip Morris saying the impact from the ban was “slightly greater” than previously assumed.

This led the company to temper its expectations for volume growth in the heated tobacco category to
around 13% for the full year, down from between 14% and 16% expected earlier.

However, Philip Morris topped quarterly expectations and raised its annual sales and profit forecasts, betting on demand for its Zyn nicotine pouches, as well

Just Dance and Poker Face, is headed back to her pop persona following the September release of her album Harlequin, which

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and
integrity is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the
first place hear themselves?

In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set to come together to support.

The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy
individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms
race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend
at an election – actually less than the major parties currently
spend.

The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds
for donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations in the first place.

So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes – and
the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.

The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed
and frequency that disclosures of donations need to be
made.

At present we have the absurd situation in which donations
get made – but you only find out the details of who has given what to whom many months
later, well after elections are won and lost.

In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much
greater transparency and far less big money being injected
into campaigning by the wealthy.

Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running
scared’ with the policy and warned the reform would ‘not
stop the rot’ 

Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning shot
– saying if it serves only the major parties ‘it’s a
rort, not reform’. Teal independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said:
‘What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’

Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.

And how much they can donate will be capped.

Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws,
labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’. 

They have lost their collective minds after finding out
that Labor’s proposal just might secure the
support of the opposition.

I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this
column.

Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have
been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to
drag the major parties closer to accountability.

More fool me.

The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put
forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.

It makes you wonder what they have to hide.
Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.

Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive Palmer

Another potential target of the laws is businessman and
Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court

The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt
and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)

The major parties have long complained about the
influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals. 

And we know the Greens have taken massive donations
from the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular
calls to tighten donations rules.

Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue
are running a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.

The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by
the way. It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.

They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes
before preparing for them.

Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want
to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.

As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only
the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally
in the years to come.

But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to
get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their support,
not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.

They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated
in the package.

To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

Anthony Albanese has tried to claim his relationship with Alan Joyce was
a strictly professional one between a Prime Minister and
a corporate titan, as he battles claims the Qantas boss was his ‘personal travel agent’ for free flights and upgrades.

However that characterization of the relationship was at odds with that made by Mr Joyce,
who said he was ‘good mates’ with Mr Albanese and had
been ‘for years’.

In the wake of the explosive claims that the Prime Minister had Mr Joyce arrange free tickets and
upgrades, Mr Albanese distanced himself from the Qantas chief.

When asked about about their relationship on Sunday Mr Albanese implied it was purely in a professional capacity, having been Transport Minister and shadow transport spokesperson before becoming Prime Minister. 

‘He (Joyce) was the CEO of the national airline …
I had the same relationship with him that I have with John Borghetti as the CEO
of Virgin,’ Mr Albanese said.

That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing Mr Albanese and Mr
Joyce apparently greatly enjoying each other’s company. 

Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high spirits on the red carpet at the Qantas
100th Gala Dinner in March last year.

In photos from the event, Mr Joyce proudly walks the red carpet with one arm
around the prime minister and the other around Mr Albanese’s partner,
Jodie Haydon.

Just five months later, in August, a smiling Mr Albanese
attended Qantas’s unveiling of it’s special ‘Yes 23′
emblazoned airplanes for the Voice referendum.

Former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce jovially walked the red carpet with
one arm around the prime minister and the other around his partner, Jodie
Haydon for a special anniversary event last year

Mr Joyce was seen touching Mr Albanese’s arm, with the PM
bursting into laughter.

Even when Scott Morrison was PM,  Mr Joyce enjoyed
an apparently close relationship with Mr Albanese as the pair
stood close together at the launch of the Qantas’ landmark Perth to
London flight in March, 2018. 

During a Senate hearing in September 2023, Mr Joyce said he had
been ‘friends for years’ with Mr Albanese.

Asked about why he gifted Mr Albanese’s son Nathan a
membership to the prestigious and exclusive Chairman’s
Lounge Mr Joyce refused to confirm or deny but
talked up his relationship with the Prime Minister.

‘I’ve been good mates with Albo for some time,’ Mr Joyce said. 

However, the then Qantas CEO refused to say whether he lobbied the Prime
Minister on the controversial decision to lock
competitor Qatar Airways out of domestic routes.

It has since emerged in a new book about Qantas, The Chairman’s

Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy
from Qantas and he would liaise personally with the former airline boss for them. 

Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his
various parliamentary jobs to ask for special upgrades for himself or his family.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips
to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu, with some being
for holidays.

Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights was for work
purposes and all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.    

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt on the accusations
describing Mr Albanese as being the ‘best friend’ of Mr Joyce. 

Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese had directly contacted Mr Joyce to request upgrades while holding
a regulatory position in the transport sector.

‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking up the phone to one of the most important stakeholders
in the portfolio asking for a free upgrade, then again, I think the Prime Minister would be able to answer those questions more effectively than anyone else because I’m not aware of anyone
else having done it,’ Mr Dutton said.

It has since emerged that Ms Haydon also has membership of the Qantas Chairman’s
Lounge

The Prime Minister denied frequently asking Mr Joyce for upgrades on Tuesday at press conference
in the NSW city of Newcastle.

‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce certainly were not discussed through calls – we
discussed the first flight from Australia to Dubai on the A380,’ he said.

‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all of
the rules.’

Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer Sarah Ferguson about how confident he was that Mr Albanese had made calls personally to Mr Joyce for upgrades.

‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.

Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr Joyce’s lobbying to block UAE airline
Qatar domestically Aston said it was ‘implausible’ to
think that the Prime Minister’s office had nothing to do with the decision.

‘It’s very hard to imagine a decision of any political sensitivity in the

seemingly been sailing through with Transport Minister Catherine King speaking warmly about the proposal until ‘everything changed’ to
stop it dead in tracks. 

 Ms King repeatedly denied in parliament the decision to block Qatar was
due to Qantas lobbying her or any Labor colleagues.

Despite Mr Albanese claiming he declared every upgrade received from Qantas the Australian Financial Review reported on Tuesday that he failed to do for
his former wife Carmel Tebbutt when the two
traveled together.

‘This is all a question of integrity. Most Australians struggle to afford even an economy airfare.
They’d never be able to afford the luxury of business class.

It’s out of our reach,’ she said.

‘Can Albanese truly be impartial when it comes to making decisions about Qantas when he’s been getting tens of thousands of
dollars worth of free upgrades to business class? The
revelations puts the decision he made as transport minister and prime minister under a cloud.

‘Aside from the integrity issues, this revelation is also politically
lethal. Albanese took care to curate a self-image of a housing commission boy who made it.

But now the perception is cementing of a long-term pollie enjoying the perks
of public office.’

Another awkward paradox of Mr Albanese’s  apparent close relationship with Mr Joyce is that the Labor leader
in a trade unionist advocate while Qantas attempted to break the power of the Transport Workers
Union by sacking 1700 staff during Covid. 

The sacking has since been ruled illegal by Federal Court in a case brought by the union with Qantas
facing possible hundreds of thousands in compensation payouts. 

The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender in semi-retired 3AW radio star Neil Mitchell. 

‘Quick test: upgrade Albo is a bad look,’ Mitchell wrote on X.

‘But does anybody believe he was seriously compromised by having Alan Joyce as a bestie?
Time to rewrite rules governing politicians.’

The 50-year-old actor – whose latest flick Joker:
Folie À Deux could be streamed now – got candid about potentially playing the supervillain before he actually portrayed him.

Joaquin recently appeared on Rick Rubin’s Tetragrammaton podcast as he revealed
that he spoke to the 54-year-old Oscar-winning filmmaker Nolan about
portraying Joker over a decade before.

He said: That didn’t… wasn’t going to happen for a number
of reasons. I wasn’t ready then.

‘That’s one of those things sometimes where you
go: “Why am I not doing this project? What is stopping me from doing this? Well it’s not about me, there’s something else. There’s another person that’s going to do something that’s like, I can’t imagine what it would be if we didn’t have Heath Ledger‘s performance in that film.”‘

Terrifier 3 dethrones Joker: Folie À Deux as box office champ

The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film and about $100 million on marketing and
distribution, according to the report.

It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to break even —
when factoring in the cut taken by theaters — though Warner Bros.
sources claim the number is $375 million.

A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report,
saying ‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous “insiders” or
“rival executives” are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported as fact.’

‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s
opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing and
ancillary run.’

So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks
of release.

In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and $248.4
million globally after three days of release.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film was considered a surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures, yet ended up being slammed by critics and
failed to ignite at the box office. 

Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history as the film
bombed at the box office on opening night. 

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as ‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially
released in theaters on Friday, October 4.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with director Todd Phillips’ process telling
Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter
Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month. 

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.

Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a
DC Studios logo.

A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment to the
publication.

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no
to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of
DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s
cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter:
‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a
Warner Bros. movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after
WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to
filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower
price point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.

shared: ‘The one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and
pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail’; director Todd Phillips seen with Gaga and Phoenix at the LA

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.

A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los
Angeles’.

A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get through to Todd.
And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re
going to fail.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere
the film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed
back – with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported
the decision to bring the film to Venice. 

Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener,
Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.

PARIS (AP) – Not even a tense tête-à-tête in the gold
medal game could spoil the vibe at Paris´ biggest beach party.

Canada´s Brandie Wilkerson and Brazil´s Ana Patrícia got into
a finger-pointing shouting match across the net in the tiebreaking third set of the beach volleyball final of the Paris
Olympics on Friday night. The referee tried to keep the peace, but it was
the Eiffel Tower Stadium DJ who cooled tempers on the sand by playing
John Lennon´s “Imagine” over the PA system.

The players laughed and clapped. The crowd applauded and sang along.

Wilkerson was shown a yellow card.

The top-ranked Brazilians left with the gold medal.

“We`re competitors and we are fighting for the same thing: There´s only one gold medal,” Wilkerson said
during a post-match news conference in which the two laughed
and jokingly put up their fists as if they were going to brawl
it out.

“Immediately after the game, it´s all love and respect,” she said.
“We bring out the best in each other, and I´m honored to play against this team.”

Ana Patrícia and Duda rallied from an 11-5 deficit to take
the first-to-21, win-by-two first set 26-24, and Canada won the second 21-12.
Brazil opened up a 12-7 lead in the first-to-15 tiebreaker when, after a joust at the net, Wilkerson and Ana Patrícia began pointing fingers at each other.

The second referee, the one at sand level, moved out to separate
the two players, but Wilkerson continued to argue and picked up a yellow
card. As the Brazilians got into position to serve
for the next point, the DJ began playing “Imagine,” the late Beatle’s song calling for unity and peace.

The message resonated with the players.

“What a beautiful opportunity we have to play the finals under the Eiffel Tower against the best in the world,” Wilkerson said.
“Like, that, in of itself, is a win.”

Wilkerson told reporters afterward that it was all a misunderstanding: She was responding to her family,
cheering in the crowd behind the Brazilians, and Ana Patrícia thought Wilkerson was taunting her.

“We´re pretty amped up, partners are coming in, refs are coming in. So it was a bit of a mess,” Wilkerson said.
“But after the game, and even right when they came to shake our hands, still on the court, there was an immediate hug and just kind of like, `Hey, it´s all good.´”

When play resumed, it took Brazil only five more
points to finish off Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes,
kicking off a party the sport’s spiritual home hadn’t seen since hosting the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games at Copacabana.
In Tokyo, the country was shut out at the Summer Games for the first time since beach volleyball was added to the program in 1996.

Three years later, Brazil not only returned to the podium
but climbed to its top step.

With the Eiffel Tower’s strobes sparking in the background and yellow- and green-wearing fans singing
and waving Brazilian flags, the country was
awarded its first women’s gold since Atlanta. (The United
States, which had won four of the last five, was shut out in both
the men’s and women’s tournaments in Paris.)

After the medal ceremony, the Canadians and Brazilians – along with the bronze-winning Swiss – posed for selfies together.
Wilkerson and Ana Patrícia spoke to each other and hugged; there may have even been an air kiss.

“It was a game thing,” Ana Patrícia said. “Everybody wants to win. But it happens. It´s everybody trying to win, but now everything is OK.”

Wilkerson and Humana-Paredes will return to Canada with the country’s first beach volleyball
medal since the men won bronze at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
That team was coached by Humana-Paredes’ father.

Switzerland beat Australia in straight sets in the third-place game earlier
Friday night to earn the bronze medal.

Nina Brunner and Tanja Huerberli beat Tokyo silver medalists
Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar 21-17, 21-15 in 39 minutes.
It was the second Summer Games in a row that a Swiss team
took the bronze medal, coming three years after Joana Heidrich and Anouk Vergé-Dépré placed third in Tokyo.

On the men’s side, Sweden was set to face Germany for gold on Saturday
night, with Norway and Qatar playing for the bronze.

Jan 25 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International Inc should not be allowed to claim that its iQOS electronic tobacco device can reduce the risks of tobacco-related diseases for smokers who completely switch from cigarettes, a
U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel concluded on Thursday.

The panel voted 8-0 with one abstention that the company has not conclusively demonstrated that
the product reduces the risk of disease. The panel rejected by five votes to four that iQOS presents less risk of
harm than continuing to smoke cigarettes.

The panel will shortly vote on whether iQOS reduces a
user’s exposure to harmful chemicals for smokers

Lady Gaga had ‘no ego’ while filming Joker: Foile À Deux according to her co-star Joaquin Phoenix. 

Despite being known as a pop diva, Oscar-winner Joaquin gushed over Gaga’s work ethic
and preparation for the role, in a new interview. 

‘I found her to be without ego and had such a fierce determination.
She would get right in with us,’ she said.

‘She understood that there had to be a rawness to the character.
There’s not a lot of actors that are comfortable working
in that way.’ 

The positive feedback comes amid the singer finally responding to cruel high school bullies – who made a Facebook group using her
real name called Stefani Germanotta, you will never be famous.

During a new video about the making of the film the A Star is Born actress, 38, talks about how fascinated she
was by the world created for the 2019 film Joker.

‘It was a very special experience,’ she told People in the clip.
‘I had never seen a world created like that before.’ 

Gaga – born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta – plays Lee,
a version of Harley Quinn, in the upcoming film. 

‘She easily slipped into that world. It’s not like she’s trying to be Harley Quinn from the comic books; she’s Lee
in this world,’ Phillips said of Gaga’s performance. 

Gaga added of her performance: ‘It brought out all of that rough and tough
energy and how big these dreams were, and how far they would fall.’ 

Folie À Deux made its world premiere at
the Venice Film Festival on September 4 and  Gaga, Phoenix and Phillips all made
the journey to  Italy to debut the long-awaited sequel.

The film also stars Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener and Zazie Beetz, who reprises her role
as Sophie Dumond from the 2019 original.

The synopsis of the storyline reads: ‘Joker: Folie À Deux finds
Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham awaiting
trial for his crimes as Joker.

‘While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles
upon true love, but also finds the music that’s always been inside him.’

Briton Matthew Smith, the partner of former Abercrombie
& Fitch CEO Michael Jeffries, leaves court in Central Islip, New York on December
3, 2024

The partner of the ex-CEO of the Abercrombie and Fitch clothing
line pleaded not guilty Tuesday in US federal court to charges of sex trafficking and interstate prostitution and was released on $10 million bond.

Briton Matthew Smith, the ex-CEO Mike Jeffries and their fixer James Jacobson allegedly used a
“casting couch” ploy to groom aspiring male models to attend sex parties at which victims were plied with alcohol
and drugs.

After his arrest in October in Florida with
Jeffries, Smith was held in custody in New York. Smith
appeared in court Tuesday in Central Islip on Long Island, to the
east of New York City.

Smith pleaded not guilty and was released on a $10 million bond put up by Jeffries
and his family, said a statement from the US attorney’s office for the eastern district
of New York.

An AFP photographer saw Smith leave the courthouse with what appeared to be a large electronic surveillance
bracelet attached to his ankle.

Another hearing is scheduled for December 10 for Smith, Jeffries and Jacobson.

Jeffries, 80, was released on a $10 million bond in late October.

Jeffries, who served as CEO of Abercrombie and Fitch from 1992 to 2014,
is accused of creating and maintaining a ring that recruited young men to have sex with
him and Smith.

Prosecutors allege that between December 2008 and March 2015 Jeffries, Smith and Jacobson used a combination of “force, fraud and coercion” to traffic
men in a sprawling prostitution enterprise.

Charging documents detail 15 anonymous victims, but prosecutors suggest the scale was probably much
larger and have appealed for witnesses and victims to come forward.

Prosecutors say young men were taken to the New York home of Jeffries and
Smith and to hotels in Britain, France, Italy, Morocco to have sex with them.

Jeffries faces the prospect of life in prison if convicted.

Jacobson also pleaded not guilty to the same charges as the other defendants and was released
on half a million dollars bond in October.
